Practice Microeconomics This Christmas Season
Posted by Administrator on Nov 20, 2005
I talked with a good friend of mine this evening who owns a business located in an average size shopping center in the Colleyville area. As we spoke he lamented about how bad business has been and it hasn’t even picked during the ensuing Christmas rush.
He’s not alone. He shared with me that other businesses in his shopping center are struggling as well and hoping to hold on through this Christmas season. As we talked he said I’m afraid we’ve been Wal-Marted this year.
While we’re talking on our cell phones I just happened to be driving by my local Wal-Mart….parking lot packed as usual on a Saturday night. To my friends point, most people today are only concerned about price, not quality, not workmanship, not service, and the list goes on.
What’s all this got to do with microeconomics? Plenty, our communities are made of many small businesses that put money back into your local economy, buy homes, live and participate in local community activities; all the things that make a community unique.
So the next time you’re going to go shopping, stop for a minute and see if there is a local small business that you can visit. You’ll help make your community stronger with each small business owner you do business with.

Wetzone Water Park Receives Top Honors
Posted by Administrator on Nov 8, 2005
ROWLETT, TX, OCTOBER 14, 2005 – The Wet Zone, Rowlett’s Family Waterpark, was recognized for excellence by the World Waterpark Association during the international trade association’s annual convention held last week in Las Vegas, Nevada.
The City-owned waterpark rose above water-themed amusement centers around the world to receive top honors for its employee training program, supervisor training program and advertising materials.
“The Wet Zone is owned by every member of our community, so we should all be proud to receive these honors, said Mayor Shane Johnson. “I want to thank our Parks and Recreation Director Jim Browne for his outstanding leadership over our parks programs, Heath Olinger for continuing to do a terrific job managing our waterpark, and the entire team of lifeguards and staff for their hard work and commitment to making the Wet Zone a first class family waterpark.
The World Waterpark Association’s Superior Waterpark Inspiration & Motivation (SWIM) Award was presented to the Wet Zone in recognition of both an outstanding employee training program and its supervisor training program.
The success of these training programs was exemplified this past season when the Wet Zone staff acted quickly to save the life of a young girl spotted floating face down in the pool. Following the proper protocol practiced over and over by the Wet Zone staff, lifeguard Matt Falls went in the water after the guest and was quickly joined by his supervisors Heath Olinger, Kasey Rutledge and Nick Vines, who took over and revived the child.
“All the training we go through in the off season and the in-services we have weekly during the season paid off with this rescue, says Heath Olinger, manager of the Wet Zone. “While that’s our job, it is rewarding and motivating to receive international recognition and these awards for our focus on training and safety.
The Wet Zone also received a Wave Review Award recognizing outstanding advertising and promotional materials. The Wet Zone’s 2005 marketing materials were honored as the Best Print Media out of more than 200 entries from around the world. The print pieces produced in-house featured a redesigned logo and included a direct mail postcard, advertisements and brochure.
“These prestigious awards showcase the hard work and dedication necessary to develop and implement successful training and marketing programs, World Waterpark officials stated during the presentation of the awards to Mr. Olinger in Las Vegas. “WWA is proud to bestow SWIM! and Wave Awards on the exceptional facilities that represent the waterpark industry in the professional, helpful and caring manner its guests have come to expect.
